As part of the requirements for my course, sometime in May I had to consult for a social enterprise company here in Birmingham called URASTAR Enterprise. Part of handling that brief included making recommendations to the social media analyst for the company, and then building them a WordPress blog.
Beautiful company, very efficient client; all but one of my recommendations were implemented in the time allotted. As much as I tried to encourage him to, Mr Luc couldn’t enable a feature on their WordPress hosted company website. It gets worse; I couldn’t do it too.
That incident reduced my confidence dramatically; what good is a social media consultant who cannot enable simple functionalities on a website?
Fast forward a few weeks later. July 23rd 2011, I was not only meeting Mr Bankole Oluwafemi (@MrBankole) for the first time in the flesh, I was in his ‘classroom’ too. Earlier in the year he bought me the domain name this beautiful website now sits on, but then today’s meeting which was just supposed to be a meeting metamorphosed into a major learning curve for me.
Mr Bankole is a young Nigerian lawyer, IT Professional (he refers to himself as a tech entrepreneur), a graphic designer, and runs a weblog - www.lordbanks.com.
He taught me about plugins for WordPress, how to determine the worthiness of a plugin before installing it, and how different effects can be created and mashed up depending on the creativity of the designer, and the needs of the client.
It was an interactive learning session, and wasn’t one sided either. I showed and then taught Mr Bankole to use extensions from Google on the Google chrome browser, especially tools for capturing.
The foundation for what this website has become was laid that day, and with learning to build websites throughout the duration of this project, my confidence is back on track because my skills are at the top of the ladder!
Below is a short interview with Lordbanks I did at the end of the day……
